The City of Stratford will be holding a Household Hazardous Waste collection Saturday, May 31 for residents to drop off materials labelled as corrosive, explosive, flammable or poisonous.
The collection will take place at the Romeo Street landfill site, 777 Romeo Street South, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Trained professionals will be on hand to safely receive things like:
- Paints (please do not bring empty containers), varnish, solvents, caulking, glue
- Fuels, antifreeze, brake fluid
- Used motor oil and filters
- Batteries (household, rechargeable, automotive)
- Household cleaners (i.e. bleach, oven cleaners)
- Energy efficient bulbs, fluorescent tubes/bulbs
- Needles in a puncture-proof container
- Refillable and non-refillable propane tanks
Starting at 9 a.m., vehicles waiting to drop off hazardous waste materials will enter the landfill site and then immediately turn right at the gravel road that runs around the perimeter of the site. The collection depot is toward the east end of the landfill, and signs will be in place to direct traffic.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- The landfill site opens at 8 a.m. Saturday for regular waste dropoff, but hazardous waste cannot and will not be accepted until 9 a.m. (this is a condition of our certificate of compliance with the Ministry of Environment)
- Regular waste drop-off hours at the landfill remain the same: 8 a.m-noon. Those who arrive after noon will only have access to the household hazardous waste drop-off.
- If you delay your household hazardous waste dropoff until later in the afternoon, the landfill site will likely be less busy
- There are other collection days scheduled this year, so if you only have a small amount of materials, consider waiting for the next one, which is September 13.
